Cybercrime's On The Rise, And The Cost Is In The Trillions

Statista’s Cybersecurity Outlook predicts the cost of Cybercrime will rise over the next 5 years from $8.44 trillion to $23.84 trillion by 2027.

Cyber Crime Magazine defines Cybercrime as the “damage and destruction of data, stolen money, lost productivity, theft of intellectual property, theft of personal and financial data, embezzlement, fraud, post-attack disruption to the normal course of business, forensic investigation, restoration and deletion of hacked data and systems, and reputational harm.”

With more people online for work and in their personal lives, the possible opportunities for exploitation by cybercriminals have risen as well. Coupled with cyberattack techniques that have become more advanced, and more tools available to scammers, the cost to consumers and companies is likely to skyrocket.

The FBIs' annual cybercrime report for 2021 showed the top 3 cybercrimes as;

  • Phishing/Vishing/Smishing/Pharming

  • Non-Payment/Non-Delivery

  • Personal Data Breach

If you believe you have been a victim of, or have information on criminal internet activity the FBI encourages you to report it at ic3.gov
